Hi! Welcome to my blog. My name is Michelle Shaw-Minutella. I am currently teaching 7th grade mathematics in the Rose Tree Media School District. This is my 8th year teaching at the middle school. This year, I am the team leader of my team and I sponsor the newspaper club. My favorite quote is, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel" from Maya Angelou. I often reference this quote when educating children. It is important to support the students we teach and help them grow into great individuals.
I have always wanted to be a teacher. I would always make my siblings "play school" with me when I was younger. I was driven and I worked hard to get to where I am. I often find myself in a leadership position at my school so I decided to pursue my administrative certification because it seemed like the logical and natural next step in my education. I have surprised myself with how much I have enjoyed my classes so far and by how much I have enjoyed learning what it takes to be an administrator. I honestly think every teacher in my building should take a course or two from this program to gain a better understanding of how a building (and administrators) operate. There is a lot of responsibility and the more I take on, the more responsibility I want. I have also enjoyed getting to know my principal better through shadowing him and accompanying him during various school meetings.
Although it can be stressful to manage my family, friends, new house, and job with the readings and assignments- the knowledge I have gained as made it all worth it. I am looking forward to continuing to learn more in this next course. Since my school recently approved the purchase of Chromebooks for every student (starting this fall), I am eager to take away new ideas from this course in particular. I really like the Maya Angelou quote you referenced. I think about this quote whenever I see some of my old middle school students grown up and out in the real world. We can't always remember each other names, but know how we feel when we see each other.
ReplyDeleteIt's really cool you found your passion at a young age. I did not become a teacher until I was 28 and I think it took an additional five years for me to realize this is where I am supposed to be, this is what I am supposed to be doing.
My school is also integrating Chromebooks in the fall! We are not 2:1, not 1:1 but hopefully we will move in that direction!!

DeleteI completely agree with you. I believe that every teacher should have to take a course or two from a program like this so that they have a better understanding of the demands on administrators. My district just approved each classroom to get 2:1 iPads so I am excited to gain new ideas for them as well.
